Trojans pressure W-G into league defeat

January 23, 2008
By RICK DEINES, TIMES-REPUBLICAN
STATE CENTER — West Marshall held Woodward-Granger to just three points in the second quarter Tuesday, defeating the Hawks, 59-44.

The Trojans trailed, 12-11, at the end of the first quarter after being held scoreless for the final two minutes of the period.

The second quarter turned the game around, though. West Marshall scored 19 points and held Woodward-Granger without a point for the last 5:06 before halftime to take a 30-15 lead.

The West Marshall press defense created some easy transition baskets in the second quarter and “that probably made the difference,” according to West Marshall head coach David Shipley.

And, while the Trojans scored 20 points in the third quarter and had a 23-point lead midway through the period, they “got lazy,” according to Shipley.

“They made some tough shots but we just can’t give up 19 points like we did in that third quarter. Our defense just wasn’t very good.”

Ross Howe paced the Trojans with 22 points, Jake Shipley added 10 and Dan Eckhardt nine in the win.

Sam Fuson led the Hawks with 15 points.

Woodward-Granger dropped to 3-11 for the season and 2-11 in league play.
