THIRD IN A SERIES

High school counselors get to see the student’s transition from wide-eyed freshmen to seniors ready for the next step, according the Marshalltown High School counselor Janelle Ham.

Counselors throughout the nation are being honored during National School Counseling Week Feb. 4 through 8.

At MHS a set of four counselors deal with setting up students’ class schedules and talking about their future. Ham said all four counselors do everything involved with the job.

The counselors meet with every one of the 1,600 students in February.

“We check with them to see if they are on the right path with what they want to do,” Ham said.

The MHS counselors have all the tools for those looking to go to college.

“We talk to them about what they are thinking about in a school and getting the applications in right away as well as financial aid,” she said.

Ham said the most rewarding part is seeing students come into their own and start figuring out what they want to do after high school.

“They start out as freshmen a little frightened and to see them mature over the years and being a part of their important decisions is the best part,” she said.

For seniors it is crunch time about their future which is why the counselors get to them right away to go over their options.

“At the beginning of the year we meet with our seniors right off the bat,” Ham said.

Ham noted being honored during National Counseling Week is a nice perk to the job.

“I really appreciate being recognized by the community,” she said.
