Bobcats 12th in state swim meet

Marshalltown drops time, but string of top-10 team finishes stops at six

Marshalltown swimmers captured 12th place in Saturday’s Iowa High School Boys State Swimming Championships at the Marshalltown Community Y.

The Bobcats scored 42 points in the event, won by Cedar Rapids Washington.

“It was a good day for us, not a great day,” Bobcat head coach Mike Loupee said.

Marshalltown had entries in seven of the 11 events. The lone Bobcats to mount the winners’ podium were the members of the 200-yard medley relay team. The team of Logan Smith, Ivo Raunic, Aaron Gervich and Brian Bacon finished sixth with a season-best time of 1:39.70. Smith led off with a lifetime best in the backstroke leg.

Daniel Wright finished 13th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:49.33 and 11th in the 100 freestyle in 49.39.

Gervich took seventh in the 100 butterfly, turning in a clocking of 53.60 seconds.

The Bobcat 200 freestyle relay team of Bacon, Raunic, Gervich and Wright was ninth with a time of 1:29.88.

Marshalltown took a seventh in the 100 breaststroke with Raunic’s 1:02.15.

In the 400 freestyle relay, the Bobcat team of Bacon, Gervich, Raunic and Wright finished 15th in a time of 3:20.78.

The Marshalltown boys’ swim team had placed in the top 10 in the final state standings each of the last six seasons, but that run came to an end despite the effort.

“We didn’t drop as much time as we wanted,” Loupee explained. “And we were competing against teams that dropped more time than we did.”

Loupee added that the Bobcat swimmers were more disappointed than the coaches.

“If you had told Coach (Rachel) Nelson and me at the beginning of the year that we would have been in the top 15 teams in the state, we wouldn’t have believed you,” Loupee said.

Loupee added it will be hard to replace the points and the leadership of seniors Wright and Gervich.

“Aaron and Daniel have been great athletes for four years,” he said, “and it will be hard to say goodbye.

“Senior Ivo Raunic did nice job, too, this year.”

This year’s team, Loupee pointed out, “was a fun bunch to coach. They worked very hard in a difficult season that was shortened by a week because of scheduling. We had a lot of meets compressed in the time before Christmas and we pounded a lot of yardage at them.”
