DISTRICT WRESTLING: Successful team season sees Trojan trio reach state meet

PARKERSBURG — A trio from West Marshall earned runner-up honors in Class 1A District wrestling here Saturday to earn a trip to state.

The Trojans’ junior Andrew Hilleman (119 pounds), junior Keith White (125) and senior Mike Bear (145) represent West Marshall’s largest group at state since also sending three in 2000.

Top-ranked Don Bosco dominated and ran away with the team title behind 12 state qualifiers to rack up 232 points. Nashua-Plainfield was second with 140 and West Marshall took third (64).

The Trojans brought six to districts and five ended up winning matches. After each of the six were runners-up at the sectional to Don Bosco, they faced sectional champions from the Riceville district in the opening round.

West Marshall came away with three victories in the first round, all from its eventual state qualifiers.

“We knew you just have to get after it that first match,” said West Marshall head coach Lonnie Ferguson. “No matter what happens, if you get to that first match and win it, you’re sitting in the finals.”

Hilleman, White and Bear each ran into the same Don Bosco wrestlers in the finals. Pat Pfantz earned a wrestleback at 112 but was denied a state trip. Matt Hemesath was third at 130 and Austin Nichols finished 0-2 at 285.

“You always want more though, but I thought we did alright as a team,” Ferguson said. “I was just hoping our other senior (Pfantz) could have made it and he had a chance getting a wrestleback.”

Bear won an opener that featured two ranked wrestlers as the fifth-ranked Trojan defeated ninth-ranked Curtis Wefel of Nashua-Plainfield 2-0.

The match was a scoreless tie going into the third period, Bear was in the down position to start the period and was able to clear his arms to record a reversal.

“He started doing a better job of clearing his arms and he ended up getting the reversal,” Ferguson said. “I thought we’d end up with the escape, but the reversal was even better.”

White came away with a 6-5 victory over Central Springs’ Eric Horstman in the opener, while Hilleman defeated Riley Paulus of RRMR 6-4.

AGWSR had two district champions in Jacob Schwebke (140) and Andrew Roberts (189). The pair placed at state last year and will be going back looking to repeat.

Class 1A first-round action is the first session Wednesday to begin the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
