Pretty in Pink

Bluder’s 500th win gains Big Ten lead for Hawkeyes

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — One month and eight wins later, the Iowa women’s basketball team has climbed into first place in the Big Ten Conference.

The Hawkeyes won at Penn State for the first time in six years, giving head coach Lisa Bluder her 500th career victory, 73-65, on ‘Think Pink’ night to raise breast cancer awareness.

Iowa (17-7, 10-3) — which has not lost since Jan. 10 — takes over sole possession of first place in the Big Ten as Purdue (13-10, 9-3) was idle. The Hawkeyes visit West Lafayette, Ind., for a 6:05 p.m. tipoff Thursday against the Boilermakers.

“It feels good to get career win number 500, but I’m happier about winning eight in a row and staying on top of the Big Ten standings,” Bluder said. “I’m proud of how we kept our composure down the stretch. “We made big baskets and played good defense.”

Iowa broke open a one-point game over the last three minutes, pulling away from Penn State (13-11, 4-8) behind Kristi Smith. After a layup by Nittany Lions’ Brianne O’Rourke made it a one-point Iowa lead, Smith scored the next six points and 10 of the Hawkeyes’ last 12. She was 6-for-6 at the free-throw line down the stretch to seal her coach’s milestone victory.

“Kristi was great down the stretch,” said Iowa’s Johanna Solverson. “I told her during one of the last timeouts to take more shots and she delivered.”

Smith finished with a team-high 20 points, followed by Solverson with 16 and Wendy Ausdemore with 10. Solverson also led the Hawkeyes with seven rebounds.

“It’s great to win here,” Solverson said. “I’m glad to be on the team that got Coach Bluder her 500th career win.”

Kamela Gissendanner had 20 points and six rebounds to lead Penn State, which has lost seven of its last eight games. Tyra Grant added 17 points and O’Rourke 15 for the Nittany Lions.
