Benson pours in 29 points as Rebels start district play

HUDSON — With his two favorite targets sidelined, Gladbrook-Reinbeck point guard Scott Benson took the third-ranked Rebels’ postseason opener into his own hands.

Benson scored a game-high 29 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists and four steals as Gladbrook-Reinbeck (19-0) got a 59-39 victory over Jesup in Monday’s Class 2A District 6 opener at Hudson High School.

Benson connected on all five of the Rebels’ 3-point baskets and sat out the fourth quarter after helping his team to a 55-23 lead through three periods.

Jared Denbow added 12 points and Ben Dinsdale 10 as Gladbrook-Reinbeck played without starters Adam Watermiller and Brett Bengen. Derek Wood hauled in a team-high 12 rebounds.

Jesup (3-17) was led by Troy Detweiler with 20 points, including four 3-pointers.

G-R will face Waterloo Columbus (16-5) in the district semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday in Hudson. The Sailors outscored host Hudson 80-71 in the second game played here Monday night.

Tigers overpower Hampton-Dumont

PARKERSBURG — Alex Nelson had a double-double and three other Tigers scored in double figures as South Hardin defeated Hampton-Dumont 72-47 in Class 2A District 5 opener here Monday.

Nelson scored 10 points to go with 11 assists for the night as the Tigers’ continually built their advantage.

Garrett Ramsey had a game-high 19 points to lead South Hardin. Alex Benson finished with 15 points and five rebounds, while Ross Hartman had 11 points. Isaac Imsland added eight rebounds and Matt Allbee had three assists.

The Tigers (13-7) led 17-10 at the end of the first half and extended the gap to 39-24 at the half.

Tanner Johansen led Hampton-Dumont with 13 points.

South Hardin advances to the district semifinals against Dike-New Hartford (11-11) Thursday at 7 p.m. in Parkersburg.
