IOWA CITY — Five Iowa seniors played their final game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Thursday night, leaving with the knowledge that they can all finally be a part of a Big Ten Conference champion.

The Hawkeyes handed conference cellar-dweller Northwestern, 68-42, heading into Sunday’s regular-season finale at Wisconsin. Iowa (19-9, 12-5) remained tied at the top of the Big Ten with Ohio State (21-7, 12-5), which eeked out a three-point win over lowly Penn State (13-16, 4-13).

Iowa junior Wendy Ausdemore led the Hawkeyes with 16 points in their 16th straight victory against Northwestern.

Megan Skouby scored 14 points off the bench and senior Johanna Solverson added 13 in her last game at Carver Hawkeye Arena.

“As a team, it really shows all the hard work we put in since the last postseason,” Solverson said. “We feel like we’re a better team more and more and we play with that confidence on the floor.”

Solverson is one of five seniors, joined by Abby Emmert, Jenee Graham, Stacy Schlapkohl and Krista VandeVenter.

Northwestern’s 42 points matched the fewest allowed by Iowa all season, sparked by a season-high 14 steals by the Hawkeyes.

Head coach Lisa Bluder’s club finished the season with a 13-3 home record.

“I think we came out and showed a dominant effort right off the bat,” Bluder said. “We cautioned our team about letting up at halftime because it happened at their place, but we came out strong and didn’t let that happen.”

Amy Jaeschke had 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead last-placed Northwestern (5-24, 1-16).

Iowa’s game Sunday at Wisconsin is slated for a 12:05 p.m. tipoff time at the Kohl Center.
