A Grundy County man pleaded guilty this week to a firearms charge in Cedar Rapids federal court.
Steven Petersen, 56, from rural Grundy County, was convicted of one count of being a felon in possession of firearms.
In a plea agreement, Petersen admitted he was convicted of felony manufacture of marijuana in Grundy County in 1992. He also admitted he stole three guns from a car on December 4, 2007, and possessed those guns plus two others when authorities searched his home the next day.
Drugs, drug paraphernalia, and a growing marijuana plant were also found at his residence.
Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a pre-sentence report is prepared. Petersen remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. Petersen faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Bob Teig as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative local, state, and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes.
The case was investigated by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
