MAQUOKETA — Mark Allen Spence, 47, of Maquoketa died March 23, 2008, at his home following an extended battle with brain cancer.

A Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Haverhill. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Haverhill. Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa. Visitation will also be Friday from 10 a.m. until service time at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Haverhill. Memorials may be given to Hospice of Jackson County or to the family. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.laheys.com

Mark Allen Spence was born on Dec. 30, 1960, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Donald D. and Ellen A. (Lemker) Spence. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1979. He married Marilyn Plain on June 6, 1981, in Haverhill, Iowa. He was store manager at Jack & Jill in Maquoketa from April 2005 until April 2006. He began his career in the grocery store business as a senior in high school with Nash-Finch at Clifton’s in Marshalltown and then as store manager at Econ-O-Mart in Columbus Junction, Iowa. from 1988 to 2005.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa, a member and past president of Columbus Community Club, and a trustee at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Columbus Junction. He received the Governor’s Volunteer Award and in 2006, he received the Distinguished Citizen Award in Columbus Junction. His main interest was his family and supporter of the Girl Scouts. He was also an avid sports fan.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Spence of Maquoketa; three children: Andrew (Sarah Conlee) Spence of Litchfield, Ill., Amber (Rovshan Sultanov) Spence of Cedar Falls and Trisha Spence of Maquoketa; his parents, Donald and Ellen Spence of Haverhill; his parents-in-law, Darmyn and Norma Plain of Marshalltown; two brothers: Brian Spence of Haverhill and Greg Spence of Lone Tree; and aunts, Doris Lemker, Velma Spence and Hildred Spence.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; and his aunts and uncles.
