Lamb pleased with probation sentence

By KEN BLACK, TIMES-REPUBLICAN
POSTED: March 27, 2008

The lawyer of a Marshalltown man who was sentenced this week after pleading guilty to aiding and abetting an illegal alien said he was pleased with the probation sentence.

“He came out very well considering what could have happened,” said Chris Clausen, with the Boliver Law Firm in Marshalltown. “He faced a potential of many more years of probation.”

As it stood, Christoper Lamb, who served as human resources manager at JBS/Swift, was sentenced to only a year of probation.

Lamb also faced possible incarceration in federal prison.

“The statutory max was five years and in the federal system that means you are going to do over four of those years,” Clausen said.

The sentencing guidelines called for a term from zero to six months in prison. A major contributing factor in the lighter potential sentence was the fact that Lamb had no prior criminal history, according to Clausen.

When I said 'them', I meant those responsible. You fine the people who personally acted, then you find the connection to the company proving that the perp received the nod from corporate to commit the illegal act, and fine the company/it's corporate leadership. It would be difficult to prove, especially if the people are visiting the HR people at their homes and not at the plant, but I'm sure they can find enough evidence over time to prove corporate's involvement.

CycloneMom,when you say just fine the h**l out of them, who is "them"? Seems to me that you have to hold specific people accountable to change behavior of an organization. I can't imagine committing a felony for my employer. Making this dude suffer some stiff consequences may be the most effective way to change the behaviors of others and companies doing this type of stuff.

I hope Mr. Lamb takes the time to look at this and see what his peers think of him. He should never have a proud moment among his peers again.

What a joke. PROBATION. GIMME A BREAK. We need to take back our city. The illegals have taken over. There are so many hispanic children in our school systems that our kids are minority. And it all started with crap like this. Lamb should be punished not slapped on the wrist.

I certainly agree with Jmac22 that Marshalltown should be a major participate in the undocumented hiring of illegals. This town is all about the money. Have we no morals??? Yes, there are some good programs for non-english speaking people, but instead of going to these villages and 'recruiting' they should be focused on the ones that are here and how they got here and work to get them citizenship if that is what the goal is. Hold the companies and corporate accountable for these actions. I guess its harder to outsource packing plants than factories. When this happens the company should be required to pay a higher tax for this type of behavior. If you are stock holders in these companies YOU are just as guilty!!!!!

Just fine the h**l out of them, because money talks for these people. Let's not waste money on incarcerating them--save that for violent offenders. What they need to do is find out if he received the nod from corporate to do that, and then go after the company. That's where the focus should be if you really want to curb the problem.

Unbelievable!! He should have to do some time for this!! Hiring of illegals is just the start of many, many more problems. Being undocumented allows individuals to slip under the radar and do pretty much what they want. They have no fear of repercussion. I agree with beanys, this problem started with manpower, and they should also be held accountable. It is time for the city of Marshalltown to begin being responsible, and stop making it a suitable place for illegal people and business practices to locate themselves. No matter what kind of tax money these business' generate. It's time to take back our city!!!

I'm sure he is pleased getting away with a federal crime. Absolutely despicable!

I completely agree, this sentence was an injustice.
