Grundy Center sixth through 12th grade art teacher Ronda Sternhagen invited artist Connie Greany from Wisconsin to help the students complete a ceramic mural.
The mural depicts several different images including a field, the Statue of Liberty, the Grundy Center Spartan logo and the water tower. Each of the tiles created feature the initials or a symbol from the student that made it.
The week-long project funded by the Grundy Center Education Foundation has brought students together and encouraged Sternhagen, she said.
“It’s been fun to see the different students working together who wouldn’t normally work together,” she said. “I’ve seen some students in here working who have never taken one single art class.”
The project has been worked on primarily in the common area which has led to the growth of interest and participation of the students as they walk by, Sternhagen pointed out.
“Art is something that can and does occur outside the art room,” she said. “It’s been fun to bring the project up here because more people have had an opportunity to experience the process and see what’s going on.”
Greany said the project went well and she always enjoys helping students “to appreciate their own creativity.” She noted that “every person is creative.”
Greany, who is a former resident of Grundy Center, also made time to work with students on figure and portrait drawing during her week as artist-in-residence.
An assembly is planned for today at 2 p.m. in the auditorium for the unveiling of the mural which will have a permanent place in the common area of the school.
