Former resident allegedly killed by her ex-husband

By KEN BLACK, TIMES-REPUBLICAN
POSTED: May 14, 2008

CARROLLTON, Texas — A former Marshalltown woman was bludgeoned to death Monday outside of a psychiatrist office where she worked, according to Texas authorities.

Denise Stephens was allegedly assaulted by her ex-husband, Brent Douglas Stephens, according to police. The couple had been divorced for more than a year and Denise had a protective order against her ex-husband.

Brent was later found by police with his feet dangling over a highway overpass. Concerned that he would try to jump, a negotiator was sent in to coax him away from the edge.

He was then arrested.

Denise did not die immediately, but eventually succumbed to her injuries, which police believe were inflicted with a baseball bat.

Denise, who had three daughters, is the daughter of Betty Seymour, and the late Fred Seymour, who had also been Marshalltown residents.

— The Associated Press contributed to this report.

first of all, i would never do the same thing he did, how dare you imply that. I personally knew Denise and her family and Brent was a ball-less coward. Was he just seeking attention or what was he doing on the edge of the bridge, just dangling his feet over enjoying the view? I just think he should have followed thru and jumped, he doesn't deserve to breathe the same air or feel sunlight on his face, at least it was in TX, FRY HIM!

Wow Junior, ever heard of an oxymoron? Heavy on the Moron in your post. "I'm frustrated, so I gotta kill someone!?"

You are sadly no better than Brent if you believe that someone should have pushed him off the bridge. You would have done the same thing he did- kill someone to rid your frustrations. It's comments like those that perpetuate the needless cycle of killing.

What a horrible and senseless crime. I have known Betty for some time and she is a wonderful woman, those children are lucky to have here there. Brent is a coward, if he loved his children he would have let them grow up with both a mother and father, even if they are in seperate households. Someone should have pushed him off the bridge, what a piece of work he is...
