Governor was right in putting a stop to exorbitant wage increases.

We never thought we’d say this, but here goes:

Kudos to Gov. Chet Culver.

You read right, we’re actually praising the governor.

Why?

Because Culver didn’t sucumb to the Legislature’s last-minute, under-the-table passage of a pay raise for elected officials.

Mind you, we’re not opposed to giving Iowa state officials a raise, but the proposed hikes of 10 to 23 percent were out of line and poorly timed.

Iowa’s budget is already tight, the national economy is faltering and most of us would agree we’re already overtaxed. The additional costs of such outrageous pay increases were poor judgement on the part of the Legislature and we applaud Culver for seeing that.

It’s troubling that Iowa’s elected officials felt it was necessary not only to increase their wages by such exorbitant amounts, but to do so literally in the middle of the night on the final day of the 2008 session.

We applaud the governor’s foresight and common sense in vetoing the pay raises.

Just don’t get too used to us giving him a pat on the back.
