A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Fr. Jim Miller officiating. She will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery. Born Mary Rosella Hughes on Feb. 4, 1930, in Delmar, Iowa, she was the daughter of Frank and Ella (Thornton) Hughes. She graduated from Mt. St. Clair High School in Clinton in 1948. She received her LPN degree in Marshalltown. On Sept. 26, 1950, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marshalltown, she was united in marriage to Harold T. Diggins. They made their home in Marshalltown where she was employed at Mercy Hospital, Evangelical Hospital and the Iowa Veterans Home, retiring in 2001 after 23 years of faithful service.
Mrs. Diggins was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Mary Council of Catholic Women, and the Chain Gang and Rusty Hinges at the YMCA. She enjoyed her family, cooking, gardening, flowers, canning, baking, camping and watching the Chicago Cubs on WGN.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Tom (Sheila) Diggins of Cedar Rapids, Karen Smith of Des Moines, Craig (Lori) Diggins, Mary Diggins, Mike Diggins, Brian Diggins, Steve (Lisa) Diggins and Amy Fiser, all of Marshalltown and Dana Diggins of Ames; 27 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.
In death she has rejoined her parents, Frank and Ella; her husband, Harold; son, Harold Jr. in infancy; granddaughter, Amanda; and great-grandson, German.
