FORT DODGE - Marshalltown's second-year head boys' golf coach Jerry Appel can't remember having seen a sub-par round in all the high school meets he's attended at Fort Dodge Country Club over the years - let alone 3 under.
Bobcat senior Jacob Butler carded four birdies and one bogey on his way to a medalist round of 68, helping to lead Marshalltown to a 311-340 rout of the host Dodgers in the season-opening CIML Iowa Conference meet for both teams here Monday afternoon.
Fort Dodge, with only two returning varsity starters from last year's state qualifier, counted four scores in the 80s. Marshalltown's team total included three rounds of 80 or better - highlighted by Butler's 3-under.
"At Fort Dodge Country Club, that's a good one," Appel said. "It's one of the tougher courses we'll play. It's an older course, there's a lot of big trees, and the greens are tricky and fast."
Jordan Alley followed with a 77 and Jamie Bjorkman an 80 for Marshalltown's all-seniors lineup. John Ryan's 86 rounded out the Bobcats' counting scores.
Mike Carter came in with an 87 and Zach Oetker shot 88.
"It was a great day to play golf, it was our first meet of the year and it's one of the tougher courses we play," Appel said.
Marshalltown will make its home course debut today, hosting defending state runner-up Ames at 1 p.m. at Elmwood Country Club.
