She was in the second row of girls vying for Little Miss Oktemberfest, but once her name was called, Emily Miller appeared at the front of the stage in the blink of an eye.

An excited Miller was selected to represent the town at Marshalltown's fall festival along with Bryan Marshall, who was picked as Little Mr. Oktemberfest Thursday night on the Marshall County Courthouse lawn.

The selection was made by drawing names out of a hat. The two will ride in the parade Saturday morning.

"She's pretty excited," said Mike Miller of his daughter Emily, who is a second grade student at Franklin Elementary School.

Her father said the plan coming into the night was for Emily to just compete in the children's run, but plans changed and she was the 33rd girl to enter out of 36 girls.

"When we got here she said, 'Dad, I have to do it,'" he said.

Marshall's selection out of more than 20 boys came as a surprise to his mother Adriana.

"I didn't expect this with so many kids there," she said. "He's very happy and excited."

Marshall, who likes soccer and playing Nintendo Wii, is a first grade student at Marshalltown Area Catholic Schools.

The night included several different children's races both on feet and on big wheels. The festival continues tonight with a the Classic Car Show downtown with several events planned throughout the weekend.
