Prairie Heritage Day offers the simple life

While horses grazed near, the day went off without a hitch at Grimes Farm Saturday afternoon as the young and old attended Prairie Heritage Day 2008.
Participants were invited back in time to a simpler life as the annual event featured many activities for the entire family ranging from candle dipping and butter making to weaving and rope making. Guests were treated to fried bread and freshly made apple cider as well.
In conjunction with the Marshall County Conservation Board, visitors were offered cake in the Conservation Center in honor of its 50th anniversary.
Demonstrations such as blacksmithing, cider pressing and corn shelling drew large crowds, while horses and sheep held the attention of young children. The bison chip throwing contest also intrigued curious bystanders.
Director Mike Stegmann commented that attendance was normal this year, crediting supporters such as the Central Iowa Antique Power Association for contributing exhibits such as vintage gas powered engines.
"Everyone enjoys coming to this event every year, but it's like every other year. It was a good day for all," he said.
Entertainment included tunes from the Westwood String Band and dancing from Marshalltown's Cornflake Cloggers.
Board naturalist and activity organizer Diane Pixler credits volunteers from around the area with making events and activities run smooth.
"Last year we had around 400 people come out, and I would guess because of the good weather, we'll probably meet that again," she said.
