Bobcats run with best in CIML, state

October 16, 2008
By ROSS THEDE

Really, only the runners' names change.

But the CIML's Iowa Conference never ceases to turn out some of the state's best cross country runners.

Marshalltown, itself an involved part of that tradition, will be in attendance today when six teams unite for the conference meet at Valley Southwoods in West Des Moines.

The Bobcat boys are three-time defending conference meet champions and have only finished outside the top two once since 2000.

The fourth-ranked Bobcats will be led by Logan Swarts and Jimma James among a steady group of seven.

Third-ranked Valley and No. 10 Waukee look to give MHS a sturdy challenge today.

"What I want to see is how competitive we are against the people we need to compete against come districts," said head coach Doug Bacon. "I think if we go out and execute the gameplan, I think the placings part will take care of itself."

Lydia Martin and Emily Hunt will lead Marshalltown's quest for its first CIML Iowa Conference title since 2001. Ames has won the last two, and Valley claimed the four conference crowns before that.
