Students write story on Fisher school event

November 8, 2008
By ANDREW POTTER, TIMES-REPUBLICAN

Students in Shannon Johnson's fourth grade class at Fisher Elementary School wanted to share news of a school event, so they decided to write their own news story.

The story highlights an assembly at the school which was a surprise to the Fisher teachers for Boss's Day. Principal Vicki Vopava donned a pirate costume to talk about the real treasures being the teachers in the school and students displayed a banner they filled with drawings.

The article was part of a unit Johnson's class was involved in at the time.

"My class was studying how to write a newspaper article at the time and we wrote this together," Johnson said.

Johnson said after the assembly for the students brainstormed ideas of words to use for the story.

"They used interesting vocabulary to describe the events of the day and all 20 students sat in front of my desk and took turns reading their ideas to me while I combined the ideas into the short write-up," she said.

Fact Box

The big surprise at Fisher Elementary

By FISHER FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS

Teachers at Fisher Elementary were surprised by their principal on Oct. 16 as an assembly was planned on "attendance." However, the assembly was a special ceremony in which students helped show their appreciation for their teachers on Boss's Day.

The entire building was brought together and a pirate themed presentation was made in which the Captain of the Fisher ship, Mrs. Vopava, said "That there was hidden treasures in the school building..those treasures were our teachers."

The captain of the big ship, Mrs. Glenn, handed out bags of chocolate treasures to show her appreciation for the dedication and excellent attendance the teachers have shown.
