The Marshalltown Community School District Board of Education heard about two construction projects on the horizon for the district from buildings and grounds staff at Monday's meeting.
The projects include a renovation of the administrative offices at Anson Elementary School and the installation of a fire sprinkler system at Fisher Elementary School.
Rick Simpson, buildings and grounds director with the district, told the board they plan to apply for Iowa Demonstration Construction Grants, also known as Harkin Grants, to help defray the cost of the projects.
The Anson project has a proposed cost of $128,106 but there is a possibility a grant could pay for $100,000 of that.
If the project moves forward there is a chance work can begin early in 2009.
"The building is ready to do some transitioning to allow this to happen during the school year," Simpson said.
The Fisher project could cost up to $300,000 and a grant could help pay for $75,000 of that. The sprinkler project has a goal to begin next summer as to not disrupt class.
Both projects would help bring the buildings in accordance with fire code and improve safety. The projects were presented as information only to the board.
The board is expected to vote on whether to apply for the grants at its next meeting Dec. 1. Grant applications are due to the state by Dec. 15.
