New boys bowling team added by board

By ANDREW POTTER, TIMES-REPUBLICAN
POSTED: December 2, 2008

Marshalltown High School added girls bowling team within the last couple of years as an official sport, now they will have the boys hitting the lanes as well.

The boys team to start in the 2009-10 school year was approved by the Marshalltown Board of Education at their regular meeting Monday night. Boys bowling will be recognized as a sport by the Iowa High School Athletic Association next year.

MHS Athletics Director Tim Bell made the proposal to add the team in front of the board.

"It's very difficult for me for a sport that's going to be recognized by the state for a (Class) 4A school to not give those kids an opportunity," he said.

Currently about 15 to 18 students are on the MHS club bowling team. Bell said there would not be a big jump in costs as the boys would ride the bus along with the girls team to meets and would share the current coach, Roger Taylor Jr.

Board President Pam Swarts said she believes involvement in extracurricular activities like this helps students increase pride in their school.

The new sport means MHS now offers a total of 11 boys teams and 10 girls teams in varsity athletics.

Bell noted the atmosphere at bowling meets is a positive one for students, as there are no crowds booing or any yelling at the referees.

"The kids are having fun," he said.

The next regular board meeting will be held at 5 p.m. on Dec. 15 at district offices.
