Board thrilled with new library

Things seem to be going well at the new library, though there are a couple of minor issues that will be looked at, the Marshalltown Public Library Board of Trustees heard Tuesday.

This was the first time since the new library opened its new location at 105 W. Boone St., the library board has met.

"Everybody's really thrilled with it," said Maureen Lyons, vice president of the board. "I don't think there's really been anything negative at all."

One of the only glitches with the new facility is ice at the south entrance. As the snow melts from the roof, it drips down near one of the library's main entrances, which can pose a hazard for visitors.

"We're going to see what can be done about that," Lyons said.

Overall, she said the public has seemed to embrace the new library. Patronship seems to be up and there appear to be a lot more people using the library than in recent months.

Lyons noted that 50 new library card holders were signed up in one day earlier in the week. That is a substantial amount for one single day.

Also, the library board heard the family of Bill Tank has a baby grand piano they will be donating to the facility for use in the community meeting room.

"They are having it moved here at their expense," Lyons said. "It was an extremely nice thing for them to do."

Although the new library has been open for nearly two weeks now, a grand opening celebration has been scheduled for Jan. 18.
