Creekmur takes back commitment to Hawkeyes

March 26, 2009
By ROSS THEDE

Chanse Creekmur is back on the clock.

The Marshalltown High School junior basketball standout, who seven months ago made his verbal commitment to the University of Iowa, rescinded that pledge on Wednesday.

Creekmur did not return messages left on his cell phone, but Bobcat head coach Ron Ginapp issued a statement for his leading scorer.

"The only thing I can say right now is that Chanse has opened up the recruiting process again but that Iowa is still at the top of his list," Ginapp said.

Marshalltown's 6-foot-6 forward told Iowa coach Todd Lickliter on Aug. 16, 2008, of his intent to become a Hawkeye in 2010, but that selection is no longer a certainty.

The announcement came on gray day for the black and gold as Iowa learned of the plans of junior guard Jermain Davis to transfer to Minnesota State at Mankato, and rumors circulated on message boards about the possibility that sophomore guards Jake Kelly and Jeff Peterson were also leaving.

Creekmur became Marshalltown's fourth all-time leading scorer this season, helping the Bobcats to a 16-6 campaign. The three-year starter led MHS in a number of statistical categories this winter, including scoring (18.1 points per game), 3-pointers made and attempted (47-for-139), steals (36) and blocked shots (15).
