Rep. Latham weighs in on proposed halfway house

By KEN BLACK, TIMES-REPUBLICAN
POSTED: August 28, 2009

Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa, has weighed in on the issue of a federal halfway house being proposed in the city of Marshalltown.

The home, which would be built near an industrial area on the city's east side, has met with opposition from local residents and elected officials.

"My office has received several complaints from citizens and local elected officials about the lack of input they have been able to provide during this process," Latham wrote to Harley G. Lappin, director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Latham said the nature of the response received has been so overwhelmingly opposed to the project that he was "not confident there is a majority within the Marshalltown community that supports the establishment of this facility."

The congressman also wrote that the support of the community would be a critical component to the success of the operation.

"I don't think anyone wants it, really," said Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce President Ken Anderson.

The chamber, city council and Marshall County Board of Supervisors have all gone on record as opposing the plan. Among the objections are Marshalltown already has a state-run halfway house and jobs in the area are not as plentiful as they once were.

Anderson said the problem has not been with the contractor Firetree, Ltd., but rather the federal government itself.

"They [the contractors] are just doing what they do, but the Bureau of Prisons has been pretty quiet," he said. "I think that's where the frustration lies."

You know folks I give up...I try to post informational things here and all that results in is petty bickering about people and their proclivities and not one of you are pulling together to fight this halfway house...Name calling is about as juvenile as it gets....and if thats all this site is reduced to...may I suggest you take the arguments back to the school yard and come back when you have something adult, constructive and worth saying? For once pull together instead of tearing people apart...maybe THAT is why marshalltown is dieing....backwoods hicks...well how are the above named arguments proving anything else???

I guess the only people that can make informed decisions are "educated homosexuals". Which means only government officials have the ability to make any decisions.

Stupid hicks have no business even bothering to think because they are not enlightened enough to embrace Uncle Teddy and his child molesting, new wave homosexual ways.

So I guess I should just sit back, relax and swallow everything that gets put in my mouth, right Jefffro. Trolls like you are priceless.

At least he is not a gay Californian voicing his opinion where it does not belong.

I just love you people like jefffro that don't live here (because YOU chose to leave) but like to comment on everything going on in this town....Don't they have a paper where you people currently live???

It's not frustration---it is OUTRAGE.

That the federal goverment (and local enablers) would ship fed felons to Marshall county without forwarning or even an opportunity to voice opposition is the height of officialdom arrogance.

Speaks volumes about what they (bureaucrats & pols) think of us---stupid, backwards, bible clinging, gun toting, hillbillys that will swallow anything.

At least we have Rep Latham to TRY to stop this thing.
