Welding class sparks interest in learning

Guillermo Martinez feels he's better at learning something when he can do it and not read about it.
The senior at the Marshalltown Learning Academy has been putting that notion to action as he takes welding classes at Marshalltown Community College.
"This is more hands-on," he said. "It's got me pumped."
Martinez is part of the dual enrollment program which allows him to take college classes while going to the alternative high school. He plans to finish up his welding course next year after graduation from MLA.
MLA Principal Eric Goslinga has noticed a change in Martinez since he began in the welding class.
"Guillermo has responded well to the challenges of doing college work," Goslinga said. "He has a strong sense of purpose and his motivation to complete high school has increased. His work ethic and technical skills will make him a valuable employee for someone in the future."
It appears welding runs in the family for the student. Martinez said his grandfather and uncles used to do welding in Mexico and he currently has an uncle with a welding shop in California.
He said he hopes to find a good job in welding when he completes the course. He said the welding course "is a good way to try a career while still in school."
