Bobcats hit winning tune

Marshalltown swimmers end dual season with easy win

October 21, 2009

None of the old records fell to new times, but Marshalltown High School's girls' swimmers still sang their own tune on Tuesday night. The Bobcats blasted Fort Dodge out of the water in a CIML Iowa Conference dual on Senior Night at the MHS pool, 113-49.

Marshalltown's four seniors - Samantha Beals, Desiree Determan, Meredith Johnson and Emily Visser - danced to an old rock and roll ditty before being honored as the outgoing class of Bobcat swimmers that, thus far this season, has been unable to 'take those old records off the shelf.'

The last two seasons have seen nine new swimming records established at MHS, and a pair of those recordholders had some of the Bobcats' top performances in their final home meet.

Johnson had two individual and two relay victories and Visser had one of each as Marshalltown completed its dual meet schedule with an easy win. Beals was on two winning relays as well, including the tone-setting opener - the 200-yard medley relay. Beals, Elizabeth Barske, Visser and Johnson won the initial event by more than 3 seconds ahead of Fort Dodge's closest competitor, and the Bobcats eventually took first place in nine of 12 events.

Johnson spanned the spectrum by winning the 50 and 500 freestyle events, while Visser took the top spot in the 100 free.

Barske claimed the 200 free and fellow sophomore Mackenzie Beals won the 200 individual medley. Junior Amy Stiehl was the diving champ, scoring 212.25 points to finish ahead of teammates Erika Hilleman and Ashley Barker.

Fort Dodge's Jaime Pearson won two events, the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke, and Ali Chambers took the 100 breaststroke.

Next up for both teams is Thursday's CIML Iowa Conference meet, starting at 2 p.m. in Ames.
