JOHNSTON - Marshalltown qualified six entries for the Iowa Girls High School Diving and Swimming Championships with their performances at Saturday's regional meet.
The Bobcats won three regional titles as Meredith Johnson won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles and the team took first in the 200 freestyle relay.
Johnson matched her own school record by winning the 50 freestyle in 24.09 seconds. Johnson will be the top seed in the event in next Saturday's state championships at Marshalltown's Community Y. Emily Visser was fifth in 25.33 to also qualify for state.
Johnson and Visser repeated their placings in the 100 freestyle to again advance to the state meet. Johnson won in 52.62 to again earn the top seed next Saturday. Visser was fifth in 55.74.
Marshalltown had season-bests in both freestyle relays to earn a spot at the state championships.
The 200 freestyle relay was won by the Bobcats with the group of Visser, Samantha Beals, Mackenzie Beals and Johnson in 1:41.28. That time was the fifth-best regional qualifying mark from across the state.
Visser, Micaela McCarville, Elizabeth Barske and Johnson closed out the meet with a runner-up showing in the 400 freestyle relay (3:43.06). Marshalltown will be seeded sixth at state.
The Bobcats finished fourth Saturday in the 200 medley relay in 2:00.43 with the group of Samantha Beals, Barske, McCarville and Mackenzie Beals. Barske took fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:22.83), McCarville was fifth in both the 200 freestyle (2:04.62) and 500 freestyle (5:40.01).
Marshalltown took fourth in the team standings with 296 points.
Johnston was first (425), followed by Des Moines Roosevelt (336.5) and Ankeny (300).
Marshalltown junior Amy Stiehl advanced to the state competition in Thursday's regional diving event as she was fourth (334.85). The state diving championships are Friday at the Community Y.
