Printy next in line to make 3s for Hawkeyes
By MARK PAWLAKThe two most accurate 3-point shooters in the history of Iowa women's basketball shared the floor last year.
With the graduation of Kristi Smith and Wendy Ausdemore, freshman Jaime Printy is one of the players in line to take up some of the slack behind the arc.
"Jaime adds a whole other dimension to our team as a deep, long-range shooter," said Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder. "I think any time you have that type of range, it really opens up your offense underneath as well."
Printy - the Gatorade state player of the year last winter - committed to Iowa as a 15-year-old and was a three-time all-state selection as a point guard at Linn-Mar High School. Printy is Linn-Mar's career leader in points (1,392), assists (374), steals (232), free throws (319) and 3-pointers (168). Those numbers came in only three seasons as Printy played only four games as a sophomore due to injury.
"One of our missions is that we want girls growing up in the state to dream about being an Iowa Hawkeye," Bluder said. "For Jaime, that was her dream."
"I just want to continue developing this program so that a lot more girls growing up in the state have that dream," Bluder added.
As a Hawkeye, the 5-foot-11 Printy will be moving to the off-guard/small forward position.
"She's a good-sized guard and she has the experience in ball handing," Bluder said. "That's going to help us with breaking presses and bringing the ball up the floor to fast break quickly. But the thing that really distinguishes her from other people is her ability to shoot the outside ball. I mean she's not a 19-foot shooter, she's a 22- and 23-foot shooter."
Smith graduated as the school's career leader in 3-point percentage at .407 and is third in made treys at 185. Ausdemore is second in both percentage (.407) and makes (221).
"It's one of the most unproven things on our team. Do I think we have the weapons to replace them? I do think we have some really good 3-point shooters on our team," Bluder said as Iowa prepares for its exhibition opener next Sunday against Washburn.
Another Hawkeye strength last year was their dead-on accuracy at the free-throw line. Iowa was fifth in the nation in percentage at 79 percent - a school record.
No one in the history of Iowa high school girls' basketball was better at the foul line than Printy as her 88.6 percent career shooting percentage is a prep record.
