Bridge brings new life to park

A 10,000 pound bridge is bringing new life to the Noon Lions Club Park just west of Marshalltown on Iowa Avenue.

The club purchased the used bridge for $175 from Marshall County and had a crane place it over a creek at the entrance to the park on Friday.

The 9-feet by 40-feet steel bridge will take the place of an old wooden walking bridge at the park which was unsafe.

"It's going to be a safe and attractive entrance to the park," said Carol Krantman of the Noon Lions.

Krantman said they will pour a concrete surface on the bridge as a walkway and also do other renovations to the park - including new playground equipment - and have it ready to re-open in the spring.

"This bridge gets the whole ball rolling," she said.

John Winters of the club said there are plans to burn off the weeds which have overrun the creek area to make it more visually appealing.

County Engineer Royce Fichtner said the bridge was formerly used for a road and was sitting at the county yard where they store old beams.

"It wasn't strong enough to be used as a highway bridge," he said.

Krantman said money from the Community Foundation of Marshall County helped pay for the project.
