A Conrad teen died Thursday after a single vehicle automobile accident in Hardin County.

Leo Barten, 17, of Conrad was ejected from the vehicle. Police said the BCLUW senior was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Two others in the vehicle, Tyler Smith, 16, of Conrad and Austin Smitherman, 16, of Beaman, were treated and released from Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center.

The accident took place at the intersection of County Road D67 and Y Avenue. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Smith was driving a 1998 Honda Accord when it failed to make a turn along a curve.

The vehicle began to slide and eventually overturned rolling several times and landing upright in the ditch.

At BCLUW High School, the mood was somber Friday.

"This is something we haven't dealt with in many years at the high school level," said Principal Ben Petty. "It came as a shock."

Petty described Barten as a likable student who seemed to get along with nearly everyone.

"He was nice and polite and didn't have an enemy in the world," he said.

School counselors, other counselors and local youth pastors were on hand to help students talk about the accident.

The senior class is also planning a memorial, but the details are unknown at this point.
