IVCCD Chancellor’s benefits unclear during sabbatical

Wynes will continue to be paid on leave

November 11, 2009
By ANDREW POTTER, TIMES-REPUBLICAN

Iowa Valley Community College Chancellor Tim Wynes will continue to be paid $158,000 annual salary if his requested sabbatical leave to work on his doctoral dissertation is approved by the Iowa Valley Community College District Board of Directors today.

He is expected to take the leave through June 30, 2010 or earlier if he completes his dissertation.

Benefits, including a car, annuity and home computer may also be part of the sabbatical leave.

IVCCD Board President Conrad Dejardin said Tuesday that Wynes' benefits still need to be determined.

Dejardin said he expects the board to approve Wynes' leave request at its regular monthly meeting today at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls.

However, it appears the Wynes' sabbatical violates the district's board policy. Its policy states an administrator may not earn more than 10 weeks of sabbatical leave while Wynes' sabbatical could last more than seven months.

"The board sets the policy and the board has this kind of authority to determine this kind of a sabbatical," said Dejardin. "It's not a violation of our policy."

Special cases are made for these types of leaves for presidents of colleges much as they are made for CEOs of companies, he said.

Dejardin was uncertain whether Wynes would return to the college district after the sabbatical.

"I'm not sure what will happen at that point," he said.

Wynes did not return a call made to his office or cell phone Tuesday.

Prior to Wynes' request for sabbatical the board held four closed sessions to evaluate an employee whose name was never disclosed publicly. Wynes attended one of those meetings and also introduced an attorney to the board who was present during at least two of the sessions.

Sabbaticals a rarity for Iowa community colleges

By ANDREW POTTER

TIMES-REPUBLICAN

If the Iowa Valley Community College District Board approves a sabbatical leave to college chancellor Tim Wynes today it will be a rarity not seen at other Iowa community colleges.

According to calls placed to public relations offices to community colleges across the state, granting a sabbatical leave to a community college chancellor or president is virtually unheard of.

None of the college officials had heard of granting a college president sabbatical leave, they said.

"Sabbaticals are more of a rare breed," said Steve Carpenter, public relations director at Kirkwood Community College. "They are harder to find now than they were 10 or 20 years ago."

Carpenter, who has worked 20 years at the college, said no president had taken sabbatical leave in that time.

In fact, faculty sabbaticals are becoming less common at colleges as a whole, due to financial reasons, he said.

Kevin Pink, director of public relations at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, agreed sabbaticals are rare.

He said the college has had two presidents within the last 30 years and neither had taken a sabbatical.

An official with Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City said they have had two presidents since 1966 and neither have ever taken a sabbatical.
