IVCCD approves leave

Wynes not in attendance at meeting

IOWA FALLS - The Iowa Valley Community College District Board of Directors approved the sabbatical leave request from Chancellor Tim Wynes at its meeting Wednesday at Ellsworth Community College's new agricultural center.

Details of the leave indicate Wynes will continue to receive his $158,000 annual salary and some benefits including health insurance and his annuity to work on his doctoral dissertation. The leave could last until June 30, 2010.

No discussion on the sabbatical leave took place during the meeting by the board.

Wynes was not at the meeting even though he was listed to comment on several agenda items. Board President Conrad Dejardin said he did not know where Wynes was and Board Secretary Barb Jennings said she was not notified Wynes would not be in attendance.

After the meeting, Dejardin did not comment further on the leave other than saying it's a sabbatical leave and "it is what it is."

Dejardin did not say whether he expected Wynes to return to the college after the leave or answer a question why public funds were going to be paid to Wynes while he is not working.

Sabbatical leaves for presidents or chancellors at community colleges are not common and calls made across the state in recent days to other community colleges could not indicate it has ever happened.

The board held four closed session meetings to evaluate an employee's status in recent weeks. No name was released of the employee being evaluated. Wynes did introduce a lawyer to the board prior to one session and was the only college employee to attend any of the sessions.

Dejardin said the board will meet Tuesday to talk about the possibility of naming an acting chancellor for the college district.

He said the three current district employees being considered for acting chancellor are IVCCD Chief Academic Officer Chris Russell, Marshalltown Community College Provost Chris Duree and ECC Provost Mollie Teckenburg.

A call made to Wynes' cell phone was not immediately returned Wednesday night.

vancleve, seven years is not that long to complete a dissertation. It is not unusual for Ph.D. students to maintain fellowships for long periods of time simply because they haven't finished their dissertation or don't have a job to go to when they are done. As long as you show you are working, you can maintain funding that way. I know of an Iowa school that gives you seven years to turn in your work.

All the administrators at MCC should be fired and replaced with people who know how to run a college. It's a perfect example of the Peter Principle, where everyone rises to his/her level of incompetence. If the board will take the time to listen to all the employees who have been victims of incompetence, biases, lack of integrity and favoritism, not to mention violation of contracts, they'll have a real wake-up call.

Don't be naive. This is how you get rid of a "professional" employee who has a contract and a law degree. It's much cheaper to grant him a so-called sabbatical than to fire him. (No reputable graduate program would allow anyone seven years to complete a dissertation.) I'm just overjoyed he's leaving.

There are a few things we need to know.

1) Is IVCCD paying for his Doctorate program? 2) Why didn't he sign a contract to return for X years after the sabbatical was done? 3) Are they now going to pay $150,000 to ANOTHER person to do his job? If not, then is the job really all that important? I mean if you can go a whole year whole his position then why pay him in the first place?

I wish the TR would start asking the hard questions about this situation. To have a board member grant someone $158,000 for NOT working and then that person doesn't show up and "it is what it is"? Any legitimate governing body would have said "NO WAY" if you can't even bother to show up to your own meeting. I want a follow up article about this situation, please.

What does he know about the IVCCD that the board doesn't want the public to find out? Why else would they be so willing to pay him? There is a (somehting) in the woodpile.

There are way too many secrets and unknkowns here....he did not even show for the meeting or give notice that he was going to be absent...****e on! Something weird is going on! I smell a fishy smell. He will take the money and run...why else would he not state his intentions???

"it is what it is"....a ripoff for us taxpayers!

Tim Wynes did wrong, But what about the board do they do any investigating on what they are approving or any sort of follow up. If they dont have time to do this job right then get off yhe board. I think you owe this to the tax payers.

This is what you get with Democrats and former IVCCD employees as board members. The inmates are running the asylem. There was some form of wrong done here but the taxpayers will never know because of closed door meetings. Once again an issue is swept under the rug! Just watch this guy will wind up at another college shortly after his pay runs out.

Shameful behavior by the IVCCD board...

How much more money will students & taxpayers shoulder for this boondoggle?

All in involved should be sacked for gross incompetence.

Prediction: Wynes will move on shortly after his sabbatical leaving IVCCD with what they deserve---egg on their faces.

Considering the economy and how all state agencies just had a 10% cut, I find Mr. Wynes position baffling. A whole year at full pay?

This man has been paid more than a 100 grand every year he has been employed at IVCCD. That is certainly more than enough time to pay the mortgage and to put together a nice savings to fund his PhD pursuits.

Not even Stanford University grants full pay sabbaticals. He better have a good thesis to contribute to the world.
