The beginning of the 2009-10 season was a resounding success Tuesday night for the Marshalltown boys' swim team. The Bobcats won nine of 11 varsity events at the MHS pool against Des Moines Hoover to win 106-57 in their season-opening meet.

"I'm really pleased. The new guys swam well, competed well, and the experienced guys had good times," MHS head coach Mike Loupee said. "This is the first year we didn't have time trials (prior to the first meet), so we were starting blind."

Brian Bacon and Mike Gettemy both won a pair of individual events and were members of one winning relay team apiece. Bacon placed first in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2 minutes, 10.36 seconds as well as the 100 freestyle in 49.47 seconds.

"With just two weeks of practice and without a push, Bacon's times were excellent," said Loupee.

Gettemy took first in the 500 freestyle (5:39.86) and the 200 freestyle (2:00.00).

Bacon teamed with Brandt Bergman, Mauricio Chacon and Jack Collison to finish first in the 200 medley relay, finishing in 1:47.99. Gettemy, Bergman, Chacon and Collison made up the winning 200 freestyle relay team. The last swimmer touched the wall at the 1:56.87 mark.

Bergman, Collison and Chacon all won individual events as well as being members of two winning relay teams. Bergman (1:10.87) took home first-place honors in the 100 breaststroke, Collison (25.16) beat Hoover's Tim Leffler to the wall by nine-hundredths of a second in the 50 freestyle and Chacon (56.81) bested the 100 butterfly field by 9 seconds.

Gettemy, Chacon, Bacon and Mike Wickwire were members of the 400 freestyle relay that was not scored, but their time of 3:42.72 was over 40 seconds quicker than Hoover's fastest finisher.

James Kent (1:01.18) won the 100 backstroke to notch Hoover's lone individual first-place finish. MHS' John Mahlstede (1:10.02) placed second.

"This is our starting point as we go through the season," said Loupee. "Even with a week less of practice (than last year), we're ahead of last season in some places."

The Bobcats next take to the pool on Monday for a dual meet against Mason City at 6 p.m. at the MHS pool, their second of eight meets prior to Winter Break.
