WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cyclones use hot 3-point hand to defeat Penn
By TRAVIS HINESThe Iowa State Cyclones shot 59 percent from 3-point range and got 15 points from both Kelsey Bolte and Anna Prins in a 78-38 romp over Pennsylvania in the first round of the Doubletree White Invitational in Evanston, Ill., on Friday.
Bolte connected on 5-of-7 shots from beyond the arc and Whitney Williams found the bottom of the net on four of her five attempts from 3. Williams finished with 14 points. Alison Lacey added 11 as the fourth Cyclone to register double figures.
Prins fell just one rebound shy of a double-double with nine while also adding a game-high three blocks. Chelsea Poppens notched eight boards for ISU.
The Australian Lacey also just missed on a double-double by adding nine assists on the evening.
"Alison Lacey and Kelsey Bolte played like upperclassmen. Anna Prinns had a really solid game throughout. We just played a lot better in the second half," said ISU head coach Bill Fennelly. "When you make shots, everything looks a little better."
The Cyclones (2-1) shot 56 percent from the field as opposed to 25 percent for the Quakers (0-4).
ISU takes on the College of Charleston (3-1) today at 2 p.m.
Mountaineers edge Iowa women at Nugget Classic
Despite holding West Virginia to just 38 percent shooting from the floor, the Iowa women's basketball team fell 69-66 to the Mountaineers Friday in Reno, Nev. in the Nugget Classic.
The Hawkeyes were down by three with the ball with a chance to tie the game with 15 seconds remaining, but were unable to get a clean look at the basket before time expired.
"We were trying to get a 3-point play, and we were trying to set it up for Kamille (Wahlin)," Hawkeye head coach Lisa Bluder said. "We're a young basketball team, and we lost our focus during the last few minutes of the game."
Freshman Jaime Printy stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds, all team-bests. Theairra Taylor and Wahlin both added 16 points for the Hawkeyes
(4-2).
Louisville pulls away from UNI
Northern Iowa's women's basketball team shot just 34.5 percent from the floor and surrendered 52 second-half points in an 81-53 setback to Louisville at the Cancun Thanksgiving Classic Friday night in Mexico.
The Panthers' halftime deficit was just six points, but the Cardinals' second-half offensive onslaught quickly broke the game wide open.
UNI (0-4) had just two players - Nicole Clausen and Kim Wypiszynski - in double figures and turned the ball over 28 times.
The Cardinals (3-1) got a 21-point, 10-rebound performance from Monique Reid.
