Times-Republican writer honored with Individual Professional Media award

December 5, 2009
TIMES-REPUBLICAN

The National Alliance for Mental Illness Iowa chapter presented Times-Republican Features and Staff Reporter Mike Donahey the Individual Professional Media award at its annual "Heroes in the Fight" event yesterday afternoon in Johnston.

Presenting the award to Donahey was Dawn Olson, president of NAMI-Iowa and Margaret Stout, Executive Director.

Donahey was recognized for his October feature length story about Marshalltown resident Patrick Neal's personal fight against mental illness. Additionally, Donahey reported on the efforts of Neal, Charlene Thiede and Dr. Douglas Steenblock, also of Marshalltown, to establish a NAMI chapter here.

Donahey cited the three for their courage and commitment to the cause of helping others recognize and treat mental illness.

The Heroes in the Fight recognition program was established by Lilly USA to celebrate dignity, courage, hope and recovery in the ongoing treatment of people with serious and persistent mental illness. The company co-sponsored with NAMI-Iowa, the Iowa Nurses Association, the Iowa Psychiatric Society and the National Association of Social Workers-Iowa Chapter.

Donahey joined the News Department in 2006 and reports for monthly supplements Marshalltimes and Past Times. He also contributes columns, news, features and advertising writing as well.

Joining Donahey at the event was his daughter, Elisabeth.
