Home & Garden Show is warming things up

Ah, spring is in the air.

At least it was Friday and Saturday at Marshall Town Center.

Sponsored by the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce, the 2010 Spring Home & Garden Show is in full swing and giving people hope that this horrid snowy weather is almost over.

"The crowds have been good," said Lynn Olberding, director of Membership & Marketing. "I think people have been cooped up much of this winter and [this] was a great excuse to get out of the house."

Festivities will continue today from noon to 5 p.m. as the Marshalltown and Iowa Speedways will have a pace car on hand with both tracks offering schedules, information, and a chance to win race tickets.

The three-day event has been featuring home improvement, cleaning and decorating ideas, gardening, lawn care, and other home-related products, as well as services a homeowner would need to get started on those warm-weather projects.

While several of the companies involved are Chamber members, Olberding said much work has gone into making this year's show a success, with great deals to be had for the hundreds of people who have strolled through the mall.

"It's great to see the vendors make contacts, not only with local consumers, but also with each other," she said. "There is some great networking that takes place at this show."

The Chamber has also partnered with the 2010 U.S. Census to give away a free gift for anyone stopping by the information booth throughout the weekend as a reminder to fill out Census questionnaires when they arrive in the mail later this month.

More than 35 booths have been on display offering chances to win $2,500 in prizes.

State Center, it is confirmed that Menards days at the mall are numbered. They are moving out at as soon as the new updated store is constructed out on Iowa AVE I hear.

How have the management responded? I'm sure raising the lease/rent rates on the little guy there, which results in more vacancies.

There are two options for the mall now, shape up and justify why tenants should pay as much as a large city to stay there(remodel and bring it out of the 80's) or level it down to a manageable size. If they can't lease the old Big Lots which is the most recent remodel who is going to rent a nearly 40 year old anchor?

panther, I didn't see one anywhere. If I had, it would have gone on my blog page just for you.

I had schedule conflicts and couldn't attend the show. Were any vendors selling plastic pink flamingos? I

I was out of town for the weekend so I didn't get the chance to attend. Hopefully, with all the extra people coming to the Marshalltown Center for the Home and Garden Show, the facility was looking its best. It would be a shame if the fountains weren't running or many of the light bulbs were burned out. Also,it would have been a good excuse to take down the stained ceiling tiles and have them repainted. And it would have been a good opportunity to have some of the empty spaces open and on view to prospective tenants. Especially with the rumored exit of Menards.
