March 7, 2010

Ah, spring is in the air.

At least it was Friday and Saturday at Marshall Town Center.

Sponsored by the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce, the 2010 Spring Home & Garden Show is in full swing and giving people hope that this horrid snowy weather is almost over.

"The crowds have been good," said Lynn Olberding, director of Membership & Marketing. "I think people have been cooped up much of this winter and [this] was a great excuse to get out of the house."

Festivities will continue today from noon to 5 p.m. as the Marshalltown and Iowa Speedways will have a pace car on hand with both tracks offering schedules, information, and a chance to win race tickets.

The three-day event has been featuring home improvement, cleaning and decorating ideas, gardening, lawn care, and other home-related products, as well as services a homeowner would need to get started on those warm-weather projects.

While several of the companies involved are Chamber members, Olberding said much work has gone into making this year's show a success, with great deals to be had for the hundreds of people who have strolled through the mall.

"It's great to see the vendors make contacts, not only with local consumers, but also with each other," she said. "There is some great networking that takes place at this show."

The Chamber has also partnered with the 2010 U.S. Census to give away a free gift for anyone stopping by the information booth throughout the weekend as a reminder to fill out Census questionnaires when they arrive in the mail later this month.

More than 35 booths have been on display offering chances to win $2,500 in prizes.
