A former Pit StopĀ gets caffeinated jolt

For some time, it has been nothing but a vacant building, taking up space, at Four W. Boone St. in Marshalltown.

But one day, the old Pit Stop Convenience Store might just become a popular hangout for the caffeine-addicted.

Nestled on a corner along the Center Street viaduct, local businessman Don Anderson anticipates brewing up something new - complete with fresh coffee, conversation and presumably sandwiches, soups and salad.

"It's been a sore spot for the Marshalltown Public Library, Fisher Controls and the community in general," he said. "I may have gotten the cart before the horse, but I'm fairly certain it will be a coffee shop."

There are still numerous details to filter through such as design, and whether it will be a part of a franchise or independently owned, Anderson said. But for now, its metamorphosis has begun.

"The gas pumps are already gone, and the underground fuel tanks will come out in a couple weeks," he said. "There are still a few issues on those we have to figure out, so it will take time."

As well, demolition is about to start on the structured canopies, and Anderson anticipates a positive jolt to the area when all is said and done.

"I'm a non-coffee drinker," he said, "but I'm hoping to help the community, and we'll make something happen."

If all goes well, the only 'pit stop' being made at Four W. Boone St. will involve a good caffeine buzz, leisurely conversation and a bite to eat in between.
