Courthouse window work delayed by production backup

September 5, 2010
By KEN BLACK, TIMES-REPUBLICAN

The completion of window replacement at the Marshall County Courthouse has been pushed back due to a backlog of orders at the window manufacturer.

Originally slated to be completed by the end of September, the Marshall County Board of Supervisors is now expecting the project to last almost until Thanksgiving.

"Every effort has been made to expedite the window delivery from Marvin Windows," John Mahlstede, project manager for Hay Construction, wrote in a letter to the board. "At this point in time, the windows have been entered into production and the fabrication is underway."

The contractor will begin installing new windows as soon as possible even before all windows needed to complete the project have been received. That will allow them to work in a continuous manner, Mahlstede said.

"The bigger windows will be put in last with the court windows being among the first," said Supervisor Pat Brooks, in an update on the project.

The project will replace approximately 170 windows at the courthouse, for a total cost of nearly $500,000, according to the bid documents approved in May.

The old windows will be replaced with a more energy efficient variety that the county hopes will result in a savings exceeding the cost of the windows over time.

The board of supervisors has also been working with the Marshall County Historical Society to come up with a solution to possibly replace the new doors that were added to the front and back of the building. Those doors have been criticized for not conforming to the architectural heritage of the building.

Brooks said the historical society recently had a grant application turned down, but may try for it again next year.

Until then, the new doors are likely to remain in place.

"We are able to have much better security with these new doors," Brooks said. "And comments about them have mostly been complimentary."
