Joy West has never considered herself a lucky person, but now she may have to rethink that notion.

The Marshalltown woman was selected as the winner of a new 2011 Chevy Cruze car as part of national promotion run locally by Clemons Inc. and the Times-Republican.

An estimated 75,000 entries were in the running for the car from 21 Ogden Newspapers that participated in the promotion throughout the country in coordination with Chevrolet dealers.

West was notified of her winning entry by Times-Republican Publisher Mike Schlesinger.

"I kept saying 'I can't believe it,'" West said. "It was wonderful."

West cut out her entry form from the Times-Republican and handed it in at Clemons Inc. in Marshalltown during the recent promotion. On Monday, she was handed the keys to a silver Chevy Cruze, an upscale car with an estimated value of $18,100.

"We are thrilled to have been the newspaper market out of all the newspaper markets of Ogden to have the winner," Schlesinger said. "We were happy to work with Clemons Inc. to make this happen locally."

Clemons Inc. owner Mike Clemons was delighted to be able to deliver the car to West at his dealership.

"You don't see this every day," Clemons said. "It's pretty amazing."

The winning entry was picked out of the back of a Chevy Silverado truck at a dealership in Warren, Ohio, which is the town where the car was manufactured. It is the first Chevy Cruze off that assembly line available for sale.

"You can't believe somebody reached down there and drew your name out of all of those names," West said. "I think this vehicle is pretty neat and driving this will be really fun."

The 76-year-old who has lived in Marshalltown with her husband Alan since 1953 said this is the biggest item she's ever won by far.

"I might have won a hot dog but never anything of any value," she said.
