For the past 10 years downtown Marshalltown has been enhanced by the beauty of hanging floral baskets on Main Street.
The people of this community, along with the generous dedication of Darrel Gaskill, have made this project a success.
The commitment to this project takes not only hours of service - but months of planning and follow through.
Gaskill orders plants in December to receive a discount, and when they arrive in April, he begins to nurture them on a daily basis.
Plants are generally placed during the month of May.
Gaskill will continue with early morning watering and other care of the plants, on a daily basis, until they are removed in September.
As in years past, 100 baskets will be soon be placed downtown, and 24 at the Marshalltown Family Aquatic Center.
While community volunteers and the Marshalltown Central Business District aid in the effort to keep our unique flower basket program, there is something we can do.
Pull out our checkbooks.
Funded solely by local residents, businesses and service clubs, it's that time of year to support out floral basket program.
The flowers are always ranked at the top of the MCBD's survey of what people like about downtown Marshalltown. It's certainly something we enjoy.
