On Memorial Day, remember our soldiers

Three day weekend! The start of summer vacation! Let's party!

This Memorial Day weekend many of us will enjoy the luxuries of time off, travel and spending time with family.

Locally, we have a number of people who have put their efforts toward something much bigger than a backyard barbecue. The Marshalltown area is host to dozens of Memorial Day events. These are indicative of the true meaning of the holiday. Memorial Day is a time to honor our men and women - our heroes - who died while serving in our military service.

We feel we'd be remiss if we didn't recommend attendance at one of the many events (complete list at tinyurl.com/trevents).

Orchestrated by a number of volunteers, we feel these ceremonies deserve our support. That's what this holiday is about.

We also call to mind our soldiers who are currently serving, many who will spend Monday fighting in war. These courageous men and women are well deserving of our daily prayers and special recognition this weekend. It's just a small amount of our time to pay tribute for our freedoms.
