PREP SOFTBALL: Comets, Mustangs stay tied atop NICL West softball

CONRAD - A seven-run first inning sparked the BCLUW softball team to a 12-0, four-inning victory over Grundy Center on Thursday night in NICL West Division action.

Shannon McCoy and Nicolette Simpson combined on a two-hitter in the circle for the host Comets (16-9, 8-1). McCoy surrendered both Spartan hits in her three innings pitched, striking out three and walking five. Simpson struck out the side in the top of the fourth.

Courtney Amundson and Abby Miller had three hits apiece to lead BCLUW offensively. Amundson scored twice and drove in a pair, while Miller had two RBIs.

Kylee Button added two hits and Sarah McCoy contributed a double and racked up three RBIs.

Raymi Ackerman and losing pitcher Melanie Seehusen collected the hits for Grundy Center.

East Marshall 3, South Hardin 1

ELDORA - A one-run lead for South Hardin was shortlived as East Marshall (16-4, 8-1) went ahead for good with two runs in the second for a 3-1 NICL West triumph.

Callie Roseland drove in two runs with a two-out double in the top of the second, helping East Marshall go in front to stay. Abby Nuese added a sacrifice fly to score an insurance run in the sixth.

Alyssa Whitmore led the Mustangs with two hits. Katie Roseland, Karly Long and Callie Roseland each had a double, and Paige Miller contributed a single to account for East Marshall's six hits.

Winning pitcher Haley Long struck out two while allowing five hits for the victory.

West Marshall 7, AGWSR 0

STATE CENTER - Krista Milder's three-run home run was the big blow as Class 2A No. 14 West Marshall scored all seven runs in the fifth inning of a 7-0 win over AGWSR on Thursday night in NICL West play.

Milder's lone hit was her third homer of the season.

Alexa Hotopp tossed a four-hit shutout, striking out four and walking none for the Trojans (17-4, 7-2). West Marshall remained one game out of the two-way tie atop the NICL West with the win.

Molly Underwood went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while McKenna Hotopp had a triple. Jamie Vis, Taylor Weyer and Emily Durlin each added a hit and an RBI, and Alexa Hotopp also singled.

Dani Fisher took the loss for AGWSR. Ella Frazier was 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Cougars offensively. Morgan Rose and Nicole Rotgers added singles.

West Marshall plays today at Marshalltown's Bobcat Softball Classic, facing Roland-Story at 1 p.m. and Bondurant-Farrar at 4:30 p.m.

Northeast Hamilton 8-18, GMG 3-7

WILLIAMS - The GMG softball team was swept in an Iowa Star Conference doubleheader on Thursday by Northeast Hamilton, 8-3 and 18-7.

Kaytlyn Kingrey had a solo homer as well as a single to lead the GMG offense in the first game. Peyton Mannan had two hits and an RBI, while additional singles came from Kristine Kienzle, Melody Beane and Abby Kulhavy.

Brittney Weitzell struck out two in pitching all six innings for GMG.

In game two, Beane had a pair of two-run doubles to lead the Wolverine bats. Kienzle had two doubles, a single and an RBI, while Kingrey added an RBI single. Caitlin Appelgate and Mikaella Koester both added singles.

GMG (5-18, 5-11) plays its final home game of the season today against North Tama, hosting the Redhawks at 5 p.m. in Green Mountain.
