Because of severe storms that tore through the area Monday, the Iowa Disaster Individual Assistance Grant Program has been activated in Marshall, Marion and Tama Counties.

Administered by the Iowa Department of Human Services, it provides reimbursement to victims for expenses incurred relating to the disaster event.

To be eligible for help, one must have a self-declared annual income less than 200 percent of the federal poverty guideline.

The grant is capped at $5,000 per household and covers various categories such as repair or structural damage, kitchen goods, bedroom furniture, clothing, HVAC, water heater, dehumidifier, sump pump, electrical, disaster damage for vehicle repair and temporary housing assistance.

Items listed are not eligible for the grant if personal insurance will cover claims or if the applicant has received assistance for the same provisions from other programs to include - but not limited to - a non-profit charitable organization, the Federal Emergency Management Agency or Small Business Administration.

According to local officials, it has yet to be determined who will head the program in Marshall County, as that is decided for each separate division having started the program for a disaster situation.

The application to apply can be found online at www.dhs.state.ia.us/Consumers/Assistance_Programs/CashAssistance/DisasterAssistance/StormHelp.html

For information regarding eligibility requirements, application assistance or questions, call IDHS at 866-434-4692.
