You are never to young to learn the basics of fire safety, as 4 year olds at Anson Elementary School learned Thursday.
Marshalltown Fire Department firefighters visited a preschool class to teach them what to do if they ever encountered a fire. Their visit was part of the recognition of national Fire Prevention Week.
"We do this just so they have the knowledge if anything were to ever happen," said Firefighter Brad Wilson.
The firefighters first gave a classroom demonstration on how to crawl to avoid smoke, how to stop, drop and roll and other things to do in their home if there is a fire.
"If there's smoke in your house, you should get out of your house as fast as you can," Firefighter Kerri Larsen said the students.
They also showed the students what the firefighters look like with all their gear on to let them know they are there to help in a fire and not to be scared of them.
Anson preschool teacher Rachel Schroeder said they read books on firefighters before they arrived and the class was excited for the demonstration, which also let them check out a firetruck parked outside the school.
"They really wanted to learn what to do in a fire and they really wanted to see the firetruck," Schroeder said. "For a lot of them, this is the first time they've met a firefighter."
