Whether it's challenges in the classroom or in athletics, Marshalltown High School sophomore Hunter Barnard is ready for them.

Barnard has shown in his Spanish class the willingness to extend his learning, according to his teacher Sarah Whitehead.

"He just likes to be challenged," Whitehead said. "He likes to be given difficult work to prove to himself he can do it."

When he's not working hard in school, Barnard, 15, also competes in Bobcat cross country, swimming and track and it's clear why he chose those sports.

"They are harder than other sports," Barnard said.

Whitehead said having Barnard in class is beneficial for her since he shows that it's not strange to want to succeed in school.

"It's great to have a leader like that," Whitehead said.
