An annual campaign by Lennox employees is bringing bags full of fun and learning for area children.

Lennox staff donated hundreds of stuffed animals and dozens of books to the Books and Beasties program, which is run by Ellen Harbaugh.

The program pairs stuffed animals with books to be given to children in the area to foster a love of reading, especially to those in need.

Dave Heddens of Lennox dropped off the items at Harbaugh's home this week in an effort that has become an annual drive by employees at the company.

"It supports the development of children in a fun way," Heddens said.

Harbaugh said her supplies of books and stuffed animals is pretty healthy right now and appreciated the support from Lennox staff.

"It's an ongoing thing with Lennox and they have just really supported us," Harbaugh said. "It's been wonderful."

Aside from the items, Heddens also presented Harbaugh with a $60 check, which came from donations received by Lennox staffer Kevin Siemsen after the death of his mother, Norma Siemsen, who was a big advocate of providing books for children.

"That's the first time we've ever gotten anything from an estate," Harbaugh said.

Since Books and Beasties started in October 2003, the group has given out 44,651 pairs of stuffed animals and books to children through the schools, human service agencies, churches and other methods.

In 2011, the program gave out 5,901 pairs of items.
