The second grade class of Angie Pietig at Franklin Elementary School left no doubt whether they would reach their goal of reading 100 books in a month.
The class of 25 students read a whopping total of 232 books over the past four weeks in their free time to successfully complete the Times-Republican Super Goals challenge. As a result, the T-R provided a pizza party in their classroom on Monday.
"I'm very proud of them," Pietig said. "They worked very hard."
The Super Goals challenge is put on annually by the T-R as a way for extra learning to go on leading up to the Super Bowl as one class in the district is randomly selected.
Pietig's class already had a love of books going into the challenge, which was evident as they zoomed passed the goal quickly.
"I knew we were going to reach the goal because we read books every day," said Ziek Slocum, 8, who is a student in the class. "I think it's cool that we got to learn and I'm really excited to eat some pizza."
Autumn Finch, 7, said she loved taking on the extra reading.
So what did she think about the pizza?
"It's delicious," Finch said.
Pietig said the students were able to reach the goal of 100 books in just more than a week. She saw them double their goal and then some and was pleased how excited they were about the books.
"It was really neat to see them talk about the different kinds of books," Pietig said.
As the children wiped off the pizza sauce from their faces, Pietig had a big question for her class.
"Just because our challenge is over does that mean we are going to stop reading books?" she asked.
The class answered emphatically:
"No!"
Looks like there will be plenty more page turning in their future.
