Foodservice employees and bus drivers in the Marshalltown Community School District are in line for raises for the 2012-13 fiscal year.
The bus drivers will make at least $23 more per month for their part-time job on the regular routes and the foodservice workers will see a salary increase of 2.1 percent next year.
Their contracts were negotiated separately but both are for three years and both were approved by the Marshalltown School Board at its meeting Monday.
The raises will account for an increase average cost to the district of $28,000 for the 65 foodservice personnel and $20,000 for the 40 bus drivers.
Board member Sherm Welker was involved in the negotiations for the contract on behalf of the district and seemed happy that this year they were made into three-year deals. He believes these negotiations do not need to be on an annual basis.
"We have better things to do with our time than to sit in on these negotiations," Welker said.
The board also approved the enactment of the Jean Seberg Drama Award, which will now be given annually to a Marshalltown High School drama student and includes a $250 prize. The award is presented in cooperation with the Orpheum Theater and the MHS Class of 1956 and is in conjunction with the annual Jean Seberg International Film Festival. The award was in place decades ago and now has been brought back to honor the actress.
"The Jean Seberg Drama Award will never again be absent from Marshalltown High School," said Orpheum Director Pip Gordon.
The next regular meeting of the school board will be at 5 p.m. Feb. 20 at district offices.
