Happenstance leads police to fraud suspect

Police arrested Marc Plettenburg, 42, of Marshalltown, just after midnight Tuesday morning for credit card fraud.

Plettenburg is accused of using a lost debit card to make purchases, Capt. Brian Batterson of the Marshalltown Police Department said.

Plettenburg allegedly used the card back in early December, but wasn't arrested until Tuesday when an officer spotted him at the Kum and Go, 916 E. Main St., while investigating another incident.

More charges for Marshalltown man

Shane Rose, 34, of Marshalltown, now faces charges of ongoing criminal conduct, fifth-degree theft, driving while barred and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police arrested Rose Jan. 27 and charged him with entering a storage unit at the former International Raceway and stealing an ATV, snowmobile and a leather coat. Police also charged Rose with neglect of a child.

The ongoing criminal conduct charge is a Class C felony. If convicted, Rose could face up to 10 years in prison.

The case is still under investigation, said Capt. Brian Batterson of the Marshalltown Police Department.

Jamaal Rahman Clarkson, of Des Moines, made an initial appearance on a public intoxication charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75 due immediately.

Ricardo Rodriguez, 105 W. North St., made an initial appearance on a driving while license is denied, cancelled, revoked or suspended charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $ 250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50 due immediately.

Matthew Allen Sumpter, 11 W. Grant St. Apt. #7, made an initial appearance on a driving while license is denied, cancelled, revoked or suspended charge and a operation without registration charge. He pleaded guilty to the driving while license is denied, cancelled, revoked or suspended charge and was fined $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50 due immediately. On the operation without registration charge, Sumpter presented proof of his registration and the charge was dismissed with court costs of $60 due immediately.

Joleen Renee Wanatee, 412 S. 3rd St., made an initial appearance on a operation while license is suspended charge and a dark windshield charge. She pleaded guilty to both charges. On the operation while license is suspended charge the fine was $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50 due immediately. The fine on the dark windshield charge was $50 with a $17.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $127.50 due immediately.

Shelby See, of Conrad, made an initial appearance on two counts of driving while suspended/non-payment charge. She pleaded guilty and was fined $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50 due immediately.

Pae Reh, 305 S. 5th St. Apt. #2, made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge and two counts of child endangerment charge. A Pre-Trial Conference is set for 9 a.m. on March 13. A Burmese interpreter will be required.

Accidents

On Friday a car driven by Christopher James Pelzer, of Tipton, was eastbound on Highway 30 just west of the intersection of Highway 330 when the wheel dropped off onto the shoulder causing it to go out of control and strike a wire guardrail belonging to the Iowa Department of Transportation before coming to rest on the median shoulder. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Pelzer car was estimated at $8,000 while the IDOT guardrail received an estimated $200 in damage.

On Feb. 1 a pickup driven by Jordan Christine Wilson, of Albion, was eastbound on Main Street Road when the driver attempted to slow down for a vehicle that entered the roadway from a private driveway and due to the frost on the road, it went out of control and slid backwards into the north ditch where it impacted the ditch, continued in a counter clockwise motion and struck the ditch a second time where it came to rest. Wilson was transported to Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center with possible injuries. Damage to the Wilson pickup was estimated at $10,000.

On Thursday a car driven by Earnesto Magana-Magana, 109 Thunderbird Dr., was northbound on Highway 14 when it swerved to miss a deer that had entered the roadway, struck a sign and guardrail then entered the east ditch where it damaged the right front door and left rear quarter-panel. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Magana-Magana car was estimated at $3,500.

The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a brush fire at 307 S. 2nd St., and six medical assists with the EMS crew to: 111 N. 3rd Ave., 707 Fremont St., 308 Bromley St., 105 N. Center St., 205 N. 21st St., and 310 N. 2nd Ave.

The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a gas leak at 9 E. Southridge Rd., a dispatched/cancelled en route to 3101 S. Center St., and a medical assist with the EMS crew to 411 E. Church St.
